Inn at Little Washington

Inn at Little Washington, web site, 309 Middle Street (Middle and Main Streets), Washington, VA, 540-675-3800 (Metro Trip Planner - opens in new window) [Mobil | Economist | Forbes | Donna Reiss | Washingtonian | WaPo | food-plan | openlist | Gayot]

$100 and up for the fixed price meal , and that is not counting wine. But one of the best restaurants in North America. It's about a seventy minute drive from Falls Church, but a pleasant one. Get the Tuna with Foie Gras on top. Or the Veal with Sweetbreads. Those are the two best entrees. Reservations of course required, but a relatively relaxed atmosphere and a nice dining room.

The food is good, but it's the service that shines.

Menus are personalized with each guest's name (and a congratulations if appropriate for whatever event is being celebrated at dinner). They're taken away after you order. On my way out of the restaurant while getting my coat I was asked if I wanted my menu. Of course I did, and they gave it to me. It didn't occur to me until the next day: they never asked me my name, how did they know which menu to give to me? A very well-orchestrated operation!

Many will choose to stay the night rather than face the prospect over a 60 mile drive after a bottle of wine. There are about a half dozen bed and breakfasts all within walking distance of the Inn, and all guests at each will have eaten dinner at the same place. Most of the B&Bs will be a better value for the night than the Inn, which charges $600+ for a room. Save the $400, stay elsewhere, and fund your dinner. That's what you're making the trip for anyway!
