Roger Miller Restaurant

Roger Miller Restaurant, 941 Bonifant Street, Silver Spring, MD, 301-650-2495 (Metro Trip Planner - opens in new window) [Silver Chips Online | Washingtonian | WaPo | City Paper | food-plan | openlist | Yelp]

I love the name (named after a Cameroonian football player). It is probably the best general African restaurant around right now, although it is not the best we have had in the last ten years. The chef is from Cameroon, but you will find dishes from Senegal, Nigeria, and Ghana as well.

Although this is a small place, lacking a good air conditioning system, the servers walk around in dress pants and white button down shirts, giving this hole in the wall a touch of class.

The food was really good, but I had to wait about half an hour for my meal. That's a good thing though, they made my fufu for my Ayaba special fresh just for my meal. It was a great dish, the fufu was used as a wrap, rolled to reveal a spinach-like filling of what the menu called 'bitter leaf'. It wasn't bitter. Oh, and that red sauce they give you? It's hot. But it's GOOD.

Beware of red meat in African restaurants. Notoriously chewy. But still yummy nonetheless. Especially in Roger Miller's groundnut stew.
