I have friends from Philly who swear that good indeed great cheese steaks exist. I’m still waiting for an existence proof. But if five of you write and tell me to try this place, I will. In any case this is supposed to be a good place for local character.

Try it; it's good. Great, really. I haven't had it in a really long time, because I'm trying to eat a bit lighter, but if you haven't gone, go.

Just moved into the area and have been trying a bunch of the places on your list.
Tried Al's today, and... meh. I've had quality cheesesteaks in Philly and elsewhere, and this wasn't even close. And what's the deal with no Cheez Whiz? Fries were also pretty awful. Greasy and soft.
Next time I'll just take an afternoon drive up to Philly.

After living in Philly for 11 years, I have to say that Al's is pretty good for a non-Philly cheese steak. I recommend you try it out, but remember to get your cheese steak with only meat, American cheese, and grilled onions. Don't put lettuce, tomatoes, or mayo on it or you'll ruin the experience. Be prepared for a long wait on the weekends, and don't forget to eat the steak with a lot of the cherry peppers they have on the counter.
